Did you know Allen has a journalism class? Perhaps you did if you are reading this, but did you know that you could also possibly get a scholarship for writing for the Flame?
Allen Community college offers a News Practicum class. This class provides students with a chance to experience what working in the field of journalism is like, and anyone can take the class. Additionally, some students may be eligible for a journalism scholarship by taking the course. There are only two requirements for this scholarship: maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and have 12 credit hours each semester.
Alex Simpson is the current director of the class. He took over the class in the Fall of 2021. Since taking over, Simpson has made many adjustments. For starters, he restructured the class and sought out new materials needed such as books to learn the writing process and how to write a news story. Simpson also added a new category for student reporters to write about, satire. Satire is the use of irony and humor while attempting to criticize or point out an issue with society or politics.
Throughout the practicum course, students will have to write multiple articles; these articles include satire, opinion pieces, or simply reporting on what is going on around campus. If you enjoy writing, check out the Allen Flame web-page and get familiar with some of the article’s students have written and send in your application if writing is something that you would enjoy.
