Just Around the Corner: Allen Readies for Summer Thrills

On Saturday, May 3, Allen Community College students participated in a 5k race in Fort Scott. The run was dedicated to eight-year-old Holden Guilfoyle, above, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder called mucopolysaccahridosis, type 6 (MPS VI). The mission of the run was to raise awareness of MPS and to raise funds for Holden's medical needs. It was estimated the organizers were able to gather over $2,399.

An estimated 600 students from nearly 40 area high schools participated Thursday, April 3, in Allen Community College's annual Ag Career Event Day. They competed in judging of livestock at the fairgrounds in Iola, meats at a locker plant in Yates Center, and entomology, food science, dairy, public speaking, agronomy, agriculture business management and other events on the Allen campus. Phil Reilly, Allen ag instructor, said this year's Aggie Day was the largest ever hosted by the college.
