Tera Reed, Allen Community College art instructor, debuted her exhibit, consisting of nine pieces titled “Tera Reed Solo Exhibit,” Nov. 5 at the Stone House Gallery in Fredonia. The gallery features a wide variety of local and regional artists.
Reed used the manipulation of simple Cold War era toys and tchotchkes, or miscellaneous items, to create artwork that she considers to be “saturated with obviousness, mental inertia, clichés and bad jokes.”
“I present trivial objects in created situations in which the everyday items are altered or detached from their natural function,” Reed said. “At times the work appears peculiar and quirky, but at other moments, it seems like typical by-products of American superabundance and marketing.”
She submitted nine pieces of artwork that vary from toy soldiers to penguins to alligators, and even a drag along toy goose, investing up to a year’s worth of work on single paintings versus some only requiring about 20 hours, depending on the amount of involvement, or time she had to work on them.
Eight of the nine paintings will be up for sale at the gallery, not including “Ode to H.M.; Listen Closely,” which features an alligator whispering to a small doll-like child.
Reed’s work will remain in the gallery until Dec 14.
