During the week of Sept. 18th – 22nd, Allen Community College hosted a week long game of Assassin tag. The winner of this game was Freshman Dickson Phoon.
This week I spoke with Phoon about his win. Phoon is a freshman at Allen and also one of our very own soccer players. Phoon has also been playing soccer his whole life. This commitment to soccer may have helped with his agility in not getting tagged and being able to tag 4 other students.
When asked about why he decided to join the game, Phoon mentioned that campus life for him had been slightly boring and this gave him something to do to pass the time.
When it comes to games like tag one needs a strategy. So what was Phoon’s and how did he manage to stay in the game so long? Phoon said his strategy for staying in the game till the end was to use the rules to his advantage, and Phoon only left his dorm room when it was absolutely necessary. This allowed Phoon’s targets to tag their own targets first. This strategy allowed Phoon’s targets to rack up their numbers so that once he tagged them Phoon would not only have his target as a number but also all of the ones that they tagged.
When asked if there was a specific mindset one should go into when playing a week long game of tag, Phoon had the following to say, “If I win, I win. If not, it’s not the end of the world.”
Despite his nonchalance to the game, Phoon mentioned that when going into a week-long game of something, a person should also go into it with the want to win, or a person won’t make it very far. One could say Phoon’s wins are pure luck, or maybe he just has the skills.
Earlier this semester we had bingo night, and Phoon was also the winner of that event. When asked if the prize of winning was worth the hassle, Phoon said that he thought the prize was going to be cash, but after finding out that it was a $50 voucher to the bookstore, Phoon said that it was, for the most part, worth all the hassle.
“It felt quite good to win. Especially after winning bingo night as well,” Phoon said.
