Between 1996 and 2006, more than 60 campuses in the United States recognized the need for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) centers. In recent times, more than 100 LGBT centers operate on college campuses across the country, many of which have paid employees.

Allen Community College formed a Gay Straight Alliance Club a few years ago in recognition of the need for support and acceptance, but participation in the group has waned.

According to Amy Pietan, psychology instructor and club sponsor, “The club became inactive over time.”

Pietan said, however, the necessity for the club hasn’t subsided.

“Yes, it’s still needed,” she said, “especially in today’s political climate, where individuals who are different are being marginalized or discriminated against. It’s important to show acceptance of others and rally together with a united purpose.“

To get involved with the GSA, students need to talk to their friends about it so that active members can be recruited. They can contact Pietan about reactivating the Allen group.

However, the GSA has been, and will always continue to be, “a student-lead organization. ” Pietan stressed.
