As the leaves begin to fall and the cold weather approaches, it is starting to feel more and more like October. Families take trips to pumpkin patches to find their perfect pumpkins. Come Halloween, one can see all of the creative and scary jack-o-lantern’s people have carved up.

At Allen Community College, we also participate in the holiday of Halloween. A pumpkin carving contest will be sponsored Tuesday evening by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Allen’s honors organization that offers membership, activities and scholarships to those who are academically eligible.

Tracy Lee, Allen PTK sponsor, is very excited about this event.

“Students look forward to this; that’s why it’s so exciting,” said Lee.

Students are encouraged to participate in this event, which is aimed to provide a fun activity for all students and to raise awareness for the PTK organization. Students will carve pumpkins, beginning at 6 p.m., which will then be judged by teachers and coaches to decide the winner. The event will be in the courtyard outside of the cafeteria.

The goal of this event is to bring students here at the college together and create the environment to make new friends. PTK is working towards creating more activities just like this one. The events being hosted by PTK are student directed, this helps teach the students leadership within the organization. According to Lee, this forms a great environment to bring students and faculty together.
