PTK Is A Family At Allen

Some of the best Allen Community College has to offer reside in one association, and that group is always looking for more pupils to join the club.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. It is for students who excel in academics and want to grow as scholars and leaders. Allen is a longtime supporter of this organization and its chapter is always accepting new students. It holds induction ceremonies in both spring and fall semesters; students will receive letters if they are eligible. It requires a grade point average of 3.5 and at least 12 credit hours in enrollment.

Over $90 million in scholarships are awarded yearly nationally to Phi Theta Kappa members who plan to continue their education.

The Allen chapter meets monthly and takes many trips each year, including the national conference. This year’s event will be in Nashville, Tennessee. Allen’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter participates in fund-raising events, raises awareness of various issues on campus, and works with the community whenever possible on activities. Not only do members meet new people in their own school community, but also other PTK organizations around the country.

Tracy Lee recently stepped into the leadership position of the Iola chapter and has strong hopes for what is to come in the 2016-2017 year. Lee enjoys the connection she is able to have with the students.

“PTK is very special to me,” she said. “It’s a community of high-achieving students and it recognizes their academic success. It is a solid path to the future. It offers opportunities for personal and professional growth, being very respected by colleges and employers. Being a member of PTK will literally follow a student through their academic and professional career.”

Quentin Haas, a returning member of PTK at Allen, says his experience with the organization has been positive. “We are extremely active in the school and help with events whenever we can,” he said. “We’re like a big happy family, and we can’t forget our mom, Mrs. Lee, who never fails to bring us food to every meeting.”

Students are reminded to keep their eyes on their mailboxes as letters to eligible students will be sent shortly.
