The face of the head coach of the women’s basketball team has changed here at Allen Community College once again. Her name is Katie Mahoney, or better known as Coach Mahoney to everyone around campus. Now, one might wonder what qualifies Mahoney to be the head women’s basketball coach. Well, there is plenty.
“I played college basketball at Southern Nazarene in Oklahoma City,” she said. “Soon after that I played basketball overseas in places like Denmark, Germany, and Iceland. After that, I was assistant coach for two years at a junior college in Oklahoma called Northern Oklahoma College Enid, and that is also where I met my husband who is now the assistant men’s basketball coach here at Allen.”
With this being Mahoney’s first year as a head coach here at Allen, it would make the transition for her a whole lot easier if she felt really comfortable with the people and the environment around her.
“I really enjoy working here,” she said. “The people are really nice and great, which makes me even more excited for this upcoming basketball season.”
Speaking of the basketball season, there is only one girl that returned from last year’s team. This is a whole new team, more than likely filled with a lot of girls who haven’t been playing with each other that long. With that in mind, Mahoney still has great expectations for the women’s basketball team.
“My expectations for the girls’ basketball team this year is to be competitive in every game we and have a chance to win’” she said. “Also, we need to reach the potential I see in this team.”
